Crew Profiles: Captain - Francisco Chadinha - South African
Francisco was born in South Africa but his father’s family was originally from Madeira, Portugal. Francisco left South Africa after school to widen his horizons and ended up in a small Village on the border of France and Italy. It was here where he was introduced to the yachting world. He started of as a deckhand on board a small yacht. It did not take Francisco very long to realize that this had become a passion. Francisco continued his yachting career on various high profile yachts. During his 13 years of being a professional yachtsman he has had the opportunity to acquaint himself with the Mediterranean, West and East coast of the US, the Caribbean, Mexico, Honduras, Australia and a wide area of Asia and the South Pacific. Francisco runs a very professionally operated yacht and knows what it takes to make the stay of the guest an unforgettable one.
Chief Engineer - Duncan Olds - South African
Duncan came to the yachting industry 10 years ago with a Mechanical Engineering diploma from Durban, South Africa. Duncan has worked his way up through the industry from deckhand to captain on various motor yachts as well as excelling in the marine engineering field, working as an engineer’s assistant to 2nd engineer to chief engineer. The list of international cruising regions Duncan has explored includes the eastern coast of North America, Bahamas, Caribbean, Mediterranean and the South Pacific. Duncan has always been an avid sportsman and lists wakeboarding and golf as his two sources of fun when away from the engine room. Duncan has thoroughly enjoyed being part of the Lady Joy crew since March of 2008 and looks forward to many more enjoyable seasons ahead.
Chef - Laurent Fisson - French
Laurent is from Rennes in France and has been cooking for 18 years now. He started his career in hotels and restaurants and the Navy in France where he completed his professional training and apprenticeship. Later, Laurent found himself in London where he progressed throughout the chef ranks and worked for world renowned chefs such as Paul Pavani, Michel Lorrain and Andrew Jeffs and in Michelin restaurants such as the Oakroom, SOHO House and Frederick’s to name but a few. It was during this time that he got his first taste of private yachts working in Cannes. Most recently, he has spent 2 years working on the yacht Aviva where he travelled the Mediterranean and Caribbean. Apart from cooking, Laurent’s passion in life is music and he pursued this by becoming a DJ in his spare time. Laurent is very approachable about discussing menu ideas to suit your liking, so feel free to pop into the galley at any point!
First Mate - Tim Welsh - Australian
Tim was born and raised in Brisbane on the East Coast of Australia. After completing school he decided to embark on a career at sea. He worked for several years on an island resort as crew and eventually moved on to skippering. In 2001 Tim decided to travel and found himself in Europe keen to work in the yachting industry. Tim has worked in the Yachting Industry for 6 yrs on a range of different yachts. During this time he has cruised to many exotic locations including the Mediterranean, Caribbean, South America, New York, Los Angeles, Alaska, Maldives and Seychelles.Tim holds his Chief Mates 3000GT ticket and is pursuing an ambition to one day become a captain. In his spare time Tim enjoys DJing, wakeboarding, snow boarding and scuba diving.
Chief Stewardess - Shelley Howard - British
Shelley hails from the vibrant seaside town of Brighton on the South Coast of England. Shelley has been in yachting for eight years, where she has worked her way up through the ranks on some very large and busy charter yachts. She takes great pride in being able to ensure all our guests have the best possible experience and stay onboard with the highest level of service possible. She is a creative person and thrives on being able to transform tables to emphasize the fantastic meals we serve on ‘Lady Joy’. She was rewarded for her great table designs and led the team in the best service category at the Sint Maarten Charter Show. Her experience includes everything from a sailboat, to the 72m motor yacht ‘SKAT’ and just recently she ran the interior of ‘TALITHA G’ and has served guests that include British and Hollywood royalty. Shelley loves to sew, design jewelery and spend time with friends and family.
Stewardess - Romy Strang - South African
Romy was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa. After an established career in Venture Capital she decided to explore her passion for travel and adventure. Romy joins Lady Joy as a stewardess and is an integral part in ensuring your stay onboard is full of smiles and excitement. She has a love for the ocean and is most comfortable in a water based environment.
Stewardess - Wilma Mostert - South African
Wilma Mostert was born in Upington, South Africa and moved to the west coast of Namibia, where she was raised. Living on various farms, she was able to develop her skills in horse riding and the training of young horses. Her first overseas experience was in Northern Germany, where Wilma was a foreign exchange student experiencing the European culture and perfecting her German language. Her degree in tourism management and her family’s involvement in the hospitality industry inspired her to travel and explore. Wilma developed a love of the ocean while working on an 18m motor yacht. She was then offered the opportunity to cross the South Atlantic with M/Y Lady Michelle, which was her introduction to the yachting world. She enjoys extreme sailing, waterskiing, snorkeling, jet skiing and canoeing. She has a vibrant personality and her endless enthusiasm makes her a perfect asset to the Lady Joy crew.
Stewardess - Lylani Niemand - South African
Lani grew up on the south coast of South Africa, were her love of the ocean began. After high school she entered the University of Stellenbosch and completed her Bachelors of Education degree. Being surrounded with the best wine region of South Africa, she quickly acquired a taste for good wine. Prior to entering the yachting world, she started her working career as a school teacher where she learned to appreciate different cultures and religions.
Bosun - Ryan Drennen - Australian
Ryan Drennan was born and raised in Adeilaide, South Australia. After finishing school he started traveling extensively and he has lived varouis countries, acquainted himself with various cultures and enjoys interacting with people from all over the world
Ryan enjoys watersports including surfing and diving. This led to him living and working in Spain where he was introduced to the yachting industry. He began his career working on various types of vessels and has gained valuable knowledge of all facets of the the operation of yachts. Ryan is a key member of the Lady Joy crew and his enthuiasium and experience will make your time onboard a memorable experience.
Deckhand - Matthew Bartlett - Australian
Matt was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, where he finished schooling and started working as an electrician. He left Australia and he found the love for traveling which led to the yachting industry. Being new in the industry, he wants to pursue his career on Lady Joy. Matt’s love for the ocean and various water sports such as fishing and other outdoor activities. Matt has avibrant personality and is always willing to learn and is there to help fellow crew members.
Deckhand - Kim Jansen - S. African
Kim Jansen was born and raised on the Kwa-Zulu Natal coastline in South Africa. Kim spent his youth Surfing, fishing, diving and sailing up and down the coasts of South Africa and Mozambique. A deep seated love of the ocean drew Kim away from his career as a high end property developer and building contractor. Kim is enthusiastic, fun-loving and passionate about yachts. He is entering the 4th year of his yachting career and his experience on deck makes him a valuable addition to the Lady Joy team.
